In this instructable I will show you how to make bagels. This homemade from scratch bagel recipe is really easy to make. I love a good bagel in the morning, covered in cream cheese, or butter, or peanut butter. Sometimes I like to make a bagel breakfast sandwich with eggs and bacon. There are so many awesome ways to eat a bagel and these homemade bagels do not disappoint! If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get baking!

Step 1: Ingredients/Tools

  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water (100 to 110 F / 37 to 44 C) (375ml)
  • 3 tsp. of active dry yeast (9g)
  • 1 tsp. of white granulated sugar
  • 4 cups bread flour or (all-purpose/plain) You may only wind up using about 3.5 cups. (512g)
  • 1 Tbsp. of brown sugar (15g)
  • 2 tsp. of table salt (8g)

Egg Wash:

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp. of water

For Boiling:

  • 2 quarts of water (about 2 liters)
  • 1/4 cup of honey


  • Large pot
  • Whisk
  • slotted spatula or spider strainer
  • basting brush
  • bowls
  • sheet pans
  • silicone mats or parchment paper
  • wire rack
  • plastic wrap
  • damp dish cloth

If this is easy, I don't want to know what the author considers difficult!! These are probably good bagels, but it looks like a standard bagel recipe to me.
Hi there, it is pretty much a standard bagel recipe, what about it seems hard to you? The actual video might make it easier. The tagline I use is "If I can do it, you can do it." Many people like the way I present the steps in a way that they understand and makes it easy for them.

If it is a good bagel, it doesn't need anything on it to be delicious... but toasted with a bit of butter or cream cheese is nice. I'm going to have to try making my own now... :-)

I absolutely love bagels! I ate my first "real" one standing on the sidewalk in New York, just outside the shop I'd bought it from. It was still hot and dripping with melted butter. I thought it was one of the most amazing things I'd ever eaten! I'm so happy to find this recipe so I can make them at home. Can the process be stopped at any point e.g. after boiling, and then restarted the next morning. It would be good to be able to eat them fresh out of the oven in the morning!
That is awesome! Some day I will go to New York and have a Fresh New York Bagel. haha. I imagine the process can be stopped after the boiling. And then put them in a sealed container in the fridge. Although I haven't tried it that way. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
