My wife loves hummingbirds which is why I designed my first hummingbird automata "Hummingbird" ( . So what could possibly be better than having a hummingbird automata? Why this dual hummingbird automata, "Hummingbirds", of course!

Assembled with over one hundred 3D printed parts and three purchased parts, "Hummingbirds" is quite definitely a challenge to print and assemble.

And as usual, I probably forgot a file or two or who knows what else, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask as I do make plenty of mistakes.

Designed using Autodesk Fusion 360, sliced using Cura 4.2, and printed in PLA on an Ultimaker 2+ Extended and an Ultimaker 3 Extended.

Step 1: Purchase, Print and Prepare the Parts.

I purchased the following parts:

  1. 150rpm Gear Motor (search for "uxcell DC 3V 150RPM Micro Speed Reduction Motor Mini Gear Box with 2 Terminals for RC Car Robot Model DIY Engine Toy").
  2. One 3vdc power supply.
  3. One coaxial connector that fit the power supply connector (optional).

The included file "Hummingbirds Part List" contains the part names, quantities, layer heights and infill settings of the 3D printed parts required for this model.

"Hummingbirds" is a high precision print and assembly model. Prior to assembly, test fit and trim, file, sand, etc. all parts as necessary for smooth movement of moving surfaces, and tight fit for non moving surfaces. Depending on you printer, your printer settings and the colors you chose, more or less trimming, filing and/or sanding may be required. Carefully file all edges that contacted the build plate to make absolutely sure that all build plate "ooze" is removed and that all edges are smooth. I used small jewelers files and plenty of patience to perform this step.

"Hummingbirds" also uses threaded assembly, so I used a 6mm by1 tap and die for thread cleaning.

I am having difficulty assembling the wings to the body. Is there a missing spacer that fits between the wing and the Pivot+Shoulder?

I also did some rework to the 6mm shoulder bolts to make them a little stronger and print with less manual cleanup. Are you interested?

I am indeed sorry for the difficulties you are having with this model.

It is entirely possible that I forgot to include a part, can you be more specific? The wing assembly is made up of "Bolt, Pivot, Wing.stl", "Bolt, 6mm 2.8mm Shoulder", "Pivot Shoulder.stl", "Pivot Wing.stl", "Rod Connecting 6.3mm Hole.stl" and "Wing Right (Left).stl".

Absolutely nothing to be sorry about. Great design!!!

The missing piece was my mistake. I missed printing Bolt+Pivot+Wing.stl. I made a spread sheet (from your pdf parts list) where the components that make up the bird are isolated.

I suspect your printer and skills are much better than mine. I needed to add some reinforcing material to the top of the stems along with some manually added support.

Aside from being a motorized hummingbird automata, there was, nor is, any electrical, mechanical or artistic resemblance to the automata in your link, as both of my hummingbird designs ("Hummingbird" and "Hummingbirds") were inspired by my wife and her love of hummingbirds.

Part of the fun of learning is employing differing techniques in problem solving and be willing to accept mistake making and correction.

For example, the first hummingbird model (Hummingbird) employed an extensive gear train which, due to friction, required the use of a more powerful motor and requiring more current.

This model (Hummingbirds) is driving twin hummingbirds with a much smaller motor that slightly exceeds the no-load rating of the motor to operate (no-load rating is .035 amps, this model draws about .045 amps) by exchanging the gear train for universal joints.

I just love to learn!
